Generic Host Process for Win32 Service Error

A few days ago, while i was surfing the web, an error occurred and it disconnected me from the internet. So i restarted my pc and after that i’ve been getting this annoying error everytime my computer is turned on and connected to internet for about 5 or 12 mins and the error message appears and it disconnects me from the internet, MSN , IRC and browser too and couldnt reconnect again. So i restart my pc everytime i get that error, was too lazy to fix it. hehehe! I got really mad about that problem and i started to work on my other pc with the same connection, not even half an hour, the annoying error popped on that even! So finally i thought of fixing that.

I met few people who got the same annoying error and some people told its a virus or something. So i scaned my pc with NOD32, Ad-aware SE , Spyware Doctor which are update-to-date, but it didnt detect any virus or anything. Some people have formatted their pc, but still the annoying error appears. I was so desperated and finally one of my friend came with a solution for this and since there are many people who got this old annoying error and also it keeps increasing day by day. So i’ve decided to post about this so people who got this problem can fix it without getting mad ;)
All you got to do is, close the so called port 135 & 445

To close it, do the following steps:

1. Open Registry Editor by going to Start>Run and in the box type: regedit.exe and press OK.
2. Now, from the Registry Editor, go to Edit>Find or Ctrl+F and write “TransportBindName” in the box without the quotation mark. It may take few mins to search. This value can be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\NetBT\Parameters
3. Double-click on that value and delete the default value in the box and press OK.
4. Find the value “EnableDCOM” which can be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole
5. Double-click on that value and set the value in the box as ‘N’ which currently maybe set as ‘Y’.
6. Close the Registry Editor and restart your pc.

You can also download Windows Worms Doors Cleaner (WWDC) and close 135, 445 and NetBIOS (if necessary) or all the ports, but by disabling only 135 & 445 my pc seems to be normal without formatting my pc. One of my friend told this problem can be fixed by a patch from Microsoft and by using a registry cleaner and also he told this problem can be created by a virus called w32/sbotworm which attacks those ports. That virus is detectable from McAfee and the virus maybe still trying to get around the fix and again create that same old annoying error. So you need to update windows and virus definitions.

So anyways i hope you can get out of this annoying thingy. Good luck and thankx for slees and vixhal for this great solution. Cheers ;)

We have install XP SP3 few days ago in our office and few PC’s have started giving the following message:
“Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

Error signature :
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.5512
szModName : acgenral.dll szModVer : 5.1.2600.5512 offset : 000116e2

I’ve been to look around over net to get a solution but think this is and issue with SP3?

I also saw event viewer and saw following error:
“Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module acgenral.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0×000116e2.”

The message clearly suggests that module is causing problem.

Please if anyone has a solution for it …..HELP ME!

56. rohon - November 25, 2008

BTW i am on a pppoe connection and blocked the ports as suggested in post 23, no error yet but it might be too soon to tell

if any of you are wooried it is a hardware error, dont, cos i went a bought a brand new computer to see if the error/virus occurs there also, and lo presto! the moment the net is connected it happens

I have a YOU telecom broadband static ip and a pppoe dialup.

Hi all,

a massive Windows Update worked for me (4 PC on 12 with the problem).

Ciao

62. Cedric - November 27, 2008

Hi all,

I think the problem comes from a virus. On the PCs with the problem, you should go to the windows firewall settings, and disable the exception for ‘files and printers sharing’…
(The problem is that on some pc that should have been ‘infected’, ie there has been a file named ‘x’ in c:\windows\system32, this exception on the firewall settings is allowed again after a reboot of windows… And I don’t understand why !)

Hope this will help…

63. Jac - November 27, 2008

any of you have MCaffe antivirus installed on your machines?, I recently installed this antivirus on 3 machines of 30 that i have in my work and only this 3 yesterday had reported this error: szModName : acgenral.dll szModVer : 5.1.2600.5512 offset : 000116e2, so i can asume that somehow this antivirus has a dll that is causing the error or recently updated one component that is causing it.

I have windows XP service pack 3 and was having a similar issue. I discovered that we have a router that was sending out some kind of a universal plug and play (upnp) code that was triggering the error. To fix this on my pc, I enabled upnp. To do this, open the control panel. Then open add/remove programs. Select the button on the left to add/remove Windows components. Double click networking services. Then select “uPnP user interface” and install this interface. I had to reboot as a part of this process. A short time later there was a popup about a upnp device being installed. It was from our router. I told our IT guy. It seems I was not the only person with this issue. He does like like having uPnP enabled for security reasons and he disabled uPnP in the router itself. I hope this helps.

If you changed your Registry settings of TransportBindName and EnableDCOM; just redo this changes; I mean set TransportBindName to \Device\ and EnableDCOM to Y; Making this changes stop printing;

102. Lukas - April 11, 2009

I have this same problem. “Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and need to close” on XP SP3.

AcGenral.dll and svchost.exe.
When I see this problem and click don’t send, start bar is changing on this classic – Windows 98.

How to fix it?

103. YASHH.. - April 22, 2009

Thanks MR.PRABINSETH.. UR SOLUTION WORKED OUT FOR ME..!!!

I’ve been having this problem recently. Usually occurs when running Firefox browser. The only major change I made recently is to install Internet Explorer 8, IE8.

I have Windows XP Professional with SP3. Antivirus is Avast which I’ve been happily using for several years.

The computer completely freezes after a few minutes and I have to use the power button to restart the computer. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM!
